TW: Child abuse, religious indoctrination, adoption and emotional turmoil

"Are you ready Stephanie?"

Orel Priestley, age thirteen, stands behind a rickety technomagic projector, hoping this one won't burn his eyebrows off or set the old, stained sheet he'd pulled off his dad''s bed on fire. That would be really bad - well, actually, probably not. Stephanie was a witch from the MACUSA itself, she would totally be able to put out a simple fire! And repair the sheet. He wondered if she could clean it too, actually, were there spells for that? His mom always tried to with muggle laundry detergent but -

Stephanie came back from the house, pulling her black hair back into a messy bun. Orel's entire train of thought stopped, and he smiled, looking at the delicate lines of the pentagram carved into her undercut. "Wow...Y-you look nice!" He quickly chimed, beaming up at her. She gave a slight laugh, rustling his hair.

"Thanks, Kid. Now..." She moved around him to sit down on the single lawn chair he'd dragged over, an ill-fitting cushion strapped to it. "What was this thing you were so excited to show me that just had to wait for tonight?"

"Oh- right!" He darted back to the projector, turning the knobs just like she'd shown him ages ago. The whole thing roared to life, spitting out light on the sheet in front of him. He crossed his fingers behind his back - this needed to go well. "Uhm- roll the credits, please!"

The machine got its act together at that, rolling on a series of images - crudely done claymation. He beamed proudly, and glanced over to Stephanie - she was watching! He wasn't sure if she'd like it, since she was a witch... He cleared his throat, and focused back on the new set of images. "The city of... Moralton!" He narrated as it looked over his house. Figures came out of the house - a smaller version of the figure of himself from earlier, plus a man with the head of a dog and a strange shape with what looked to be brown hair. "Uh- eight years ago! That's me, and my mom, and my dad!"

"Why does your family look like that?" Stephanie asked, clearly amused without looking over to him.

"Well - my mom really likes cleaning and this is before Shane was born so she's a pregnant broom," He started, glancing between her and the screen wearily. He didn't want to miss the next important cue. "And my dad looks like a puppy because he is loyal and good!" The whole thing rolled off his tongue unnaturally, but he quickly picked it up as the two adult figures disappeared to leave the Orel figure alone. Another figure came onto the screen - this one was another humanoid figure, but tall and with very blatant attempts at wrinkles. "That's my grandpa! My parents left me with him when I was little for a while. He's a wizard!"

He was very proud of that. The figures held hands, and the scenery was built around them - a farm. "He taught me a whole lot of things! Like some magic-" His grandpa figure was waving his wand as things flew around them on the farm, chores being done quickly. "-But also some normal things, too, like how some people lie, and that chickens come from nature, and how to balance a checkbook." He nodded matter-of-factly.

"How old were you again? Two?" Orel snorted - it was obvious she was playing around.

"Four! Close enough, though! I know that underage magic is bad, but he did show me a lot of things, he said I had a talent!" He was clearly proud, beaming. She looked over her shoulder, and then back to the screen.

"What's happening now?"

"Oh- uhm, so Shane was born! That's him." The figure was a yellow blob with red stripes. "And Dad came and took me away from Grandpa, even though I really liked it there and stayed there for a really long time. They didn't like each other. Dad says that Grandpa... Uhm..." His voice trickled off.

"...What?" Stephanie brought him back to Earth, as images of belts, books and churches played on - he'd lost track of where they were. He knew he'd had parts of going into his dad's study for the first time there, and parts about his (frequent) punishments and his (frequent) magical outbursts that he could remember, and his first time at church too, but...

"He says he's a bad man." He didn't want to say the rest. He didn't want to say that his father said that his grandpa was a dark wizard. If that was true... "Oh! This part's good!" He pointed quickly at a little girl figure. "That's my friend Christina! Her parents moved in next to us! But our parents didn't like each other, so, we weren't really allowed to play together..." He grinned now, as the figures danced together and jumped over Lego slides. "But that didn't stop us! I took her to a dance - that was, uhhh... I guess three years ago? Or four?" Whoops.

Christina was really something special. He still thought about her, a lot of the time - about how nice she was, and how she looked at the dance, and how she understood him completely. He hoped she was doing well.... and he prayed she wouldn't think any lesser of him for being a wizard. After all, he'd been told very honestly that he could be a wizard and Christian, which seemed fake and he knew that most of the people here would agree.

That was why he really liked Stephanie. She was so different from everyone else. She paid attention to him and didn't mind him hanging out, and she was a witch! He didn't have to hide anything or pretend he was going to some 'private religious prep school' that his parents told everyone he was going to, because she knew! Even if... well, sometimes it seemed like she was a glorified babysitter. But he didn't mind that. He'd never even had a babysitter before!

Still, he knew she was here to do a job, especially when she asked him questions all the time. He wondered if she was still around during this last school year, before he came back, or if she was just pretending this was her summer home. It was probably boring for a grown-up witch to be stuck in a place like Moralton, where people wouldn't even recycle because it seemed like 'witchcraft.' If only they knew the half of it.

The screen jittered as the projector made a creaky, coughing sound. Orel glanced back to the sheet - oh, it was his letter! His father burned the original copy. Even he could imagine how fake it sounded - especially given that his grandfather barely did magic when his father was a kid - so it was just drawn in scribbles of ink on parchment. His parents had talked and deliberated it for days - his mom had been tense and even more distant than normal, his father quicker to anger, and Orel had gotten in trouble way more often than he had for a while before.

His mother revealed she was a squib from a family in the UK, and that she'd prefer he go to their school, Hogwarts. Eventually, he'd finally gotten to meet that side of his family, thanks to the Floo Network - they were prissy, and stuck up, and kept trying to convince him to leave his family. The screen showed him with them as they walked to the Hogwarts Express (an old Christmas train set he'd found in the closet), and his mind replayed the conversation - They're unfit, you know; you're magic and should be with your own kind. Them keeping you is terrible! He'd just smiled and nodded along.

Ah, great! It was his first year at Hogwarts, at being sorted and getting to hang out with all his friends, and all the letters he sent home that never got returned, and him not being picked up by anyone at King's Cross for Christmas break, and learning how to fly! His first year was his favorite year - even if he was only just going into his third year. Last year...

Oh. It was at this part. He hadn't wanted to include all this, but... he felt like he needed to. Stephanie would want to see it, to make sure he hadn't forgotten! She asked him about it all the time... not that she shouldn't have. It was why she had to come out here in the first place. The MACUSA had honed in on him thanks to the Trace - he was so sure he was going to get in so much trouble, to get his wand snapped even though it hadn't been the problem at all... and instead, they just gave him Stephanie. He was so grateful.

It all started when he finally got home for the summer. He'd been so excited! He hadn't seen his family in a year, he wanted to be around them desperately - but everything was cold. Even Shane was a little less talkative to him than usual.

His father confiscated his wand. He didn't even want him to return to Hogwarts the next year - he'd gone off the handle, scolding Orel and reminding him that this was a Christian household, and that magic would not under any circumstances be tolerated... and that they were going to go on a traditional 'father-son hunting trip.'

He knew he should have said no the second he was told he had to learn how to shoot a gun. He hated it, his hands shaky and unable to fire at a target, let alone an animal like a rabbit. But his father kept drilling into him that he had to learn how, that it was a man's birthright, that it was what he was supposed to do. He didn't know how to say no, especially not when he wanted so desperately to do something, anything with his father.

He should have said no.

That kept repeating in his head as the images came across the screen. He only really recognized blips here and there - his father getting angry at him at a campfire because he was too drunk to stand, the liquor bottles smashing as his shameful emotional magic decided to blow them up (at least his father hadn't even noticed, or at least thought he'd shot them), his father's gun accidentally going off- Orel's right leg tensed and he adjusted his pant leg. That normally stopped the phantom pains.

"And here's what you know!" He quickly blurted out as a red-eyed grizzly bear showed up on screen. His voice was breathy. He shut off the projector as it groaned, slumping forward. "The bear showed up after my dad fell asleep, and I accidentally blasted it off, and then you showed up, and then I went back to school!" He beamed. He could leave out the rest, like her fixing his leg and them having to come up with cover stories, and... everything that happened. He'd protected his father, too... he'd never told her what really happened. As far as she knew - and as far as the video showed, at least from what he had intended - he'd shot himself in the leg.

Stephanie gave a laugh - it was uncomfortable. He could tell. He was uncomfortable too. "How did school go, by the way? I never asked."

He relaxed. Stephanie really was the best. He grinned, going to fix the projector and take down the sheet. "It was great. I learned how to garden and how to draw and a lot of really useful spells... wizards really are nice."

"Are you Orel Priestley?"

Orel looked behind him, feet dragging his bike to a stop. A blonde man with a mustache and in ill-fitting plainclothes was watching him from a... well, he guessed it was a parked car nearby, but it looked more like what someone would think a car looked like if they hadn't seen one before. Oh well! He turned back around, rolling his bike back to stop in front of him. "Uh, yeah?"

The man smiled, producing a wand to make the door open. "Get in, Kid."

Orel only hesitated as his hand was already holding the door open. "What about my bike?"

The man frowned, looking at it. "...Can't you just leave it there for a little bit?"

"Well... uhm, if it's really that important!" He smiled, looking around and leaning it against the nearby fence. His smile didn't leave his face as he sat down in the transfigured front seat of the car - he focused down, trying to figure out what the other man had used to turn it into this complex of a shape. As it began to lift into the air before he'd even been able to look around for a seat belt, he gripped the seat and looked over to the wizard beside him. "Where are we going?"

"Not far. Somewhere a little more private." Orel nodded, focusing forward. The car eventually made its way to an unfamiliar backyard, sinking low - he glanced around nervously to see if anyone had been watching. The older man seemed to sense this, and, as he opened up both doors without touching any handles, looked to him. "Camouflage spell. Do they teach those in year two at Hogwarts? I have no idea."

Orel shook his head, pulling out of the car to stand in the back yard. High fences rose on all sides, and a big tree loomed in the corner. The house itself was small, right in front of them - but the older man didn't go for that. Instead, he moved to a picnic table stationed on the patio, and waved his wand at the car. Whatever tranfiguration spells were on it left - a strange contraption, a broom and what looked like the sidecar of a motorcycle sank into the grass.

"Do you know who I am?" The man's low voice broke Orel's stare. He glanced back over his shoulder, shaking his head and going to sit across from him. "I'm Daniel Stoddard. I work with MACUSA... sort of."

Orel's forehead knit in. "...Sort of?"

"I work with Ilvermorny students. It's-"

"Oh! Well, golly... I'm sure glad you're asking, but... I really don't want to switch schools!" He felt awkward, thumbs looping through his belt loops. "I know it's silly to go to school all the way in Europe, but-"

"It's actually not about that." He stopped him quickly. Orel was once again confused, but didn't interject. "I'm actually an associate of Stephanie's."

Orel's eyes widened. "Oh- wow!! Stephanie's really nice! But... I don't understand. Why do you need to talk to me if it's not about changing schools?"

Daniel sighed, leaning back on the bench. Orel fell silent, an uneasiness filling the air between them. He really wanted to leave now - he he wasn't entirely sure where he was right now, or what direction he would need to take to get back home- no, not home. He needed to get his bike first. He hadn't mowed enough lawns to afford a new one this summer, and his parents wouldn't want to splurge on one... "I wanted to talk to you about your family."

Orel's laughter resonated around the full backyard. "That's it? Oh, that's easy!! Is it because I'm a muggleborn- oh wait you guys call us no-majborn, but it's the same thing! I mean, we're not really that different from wizards, I have a mom, a dad, and a little brother! Shane's kind of annoying sometimes but I think that's normal-"

"Orel." Daniel had that same way of concealed annoyance that most people did when talking to him. Orel nodded, falling silent quickly. "Do you remember why Stephanie came to live in this neighborhood?"

Orel's smile fell immediately, face stony. "Yes, Sir - is this about using the projector? I didn't think that counted, it was only with her-"

"It's not about your magic. Or- it is." He sat forward, shifting on the bench. "Do you recall the times you've had magical outbursts?"

Orel nodded, taking this as an invitation to speak. "Loads of times - uhm, there was this one time when I was nine, in a spelling bee..." He frowned. He'd gotten so far in it, but he'd nearly misspelled a word - his father had looked so disappointed and so upset in the crowd... "I accidentally made the other boy's microphone short out and shock him, so he'd lose... or there was the time I threw the school bully against the wall, uhm, a few years ago?" All these sounded so awful now that he was saying them out loud. No wonder he was so bad.

"And in the past year?"

Orel paused. "...I don't know. At school it doesn't really happen! Maybe it's because there's more magic. And now Stephanie's here so it all cancels out, maybe?" He beamed, completely missing the point. Daniel still stared at him.

"Orel... your grandfather is a wizard, isn't he? Arthur Priestley?"

Oh no- if he knew his name... "...Do you think I'm going to become a dark wizard like he was?" He asked, voice quiet and solemn.

Daniel looked like he'd been hit by a bus, staring at him incredulously. "He- what? Orel - your grandfather isn't a dark wizard. He used to be an auror - he married a no-maj! Dark wizards don't do things like that!"

"Then... why are you asking me about him?"

"Stephanie and I, and our division of the MACUSA, think it would be best if you went and stayed with him."

Orel felt his heart drop into his stomach. His breath came out in heaves, sweat breaking up along his forehead - he didn't know why. An overwhelming sense of dread had just washed over him. "W-what are you talking about? Why? I can't-"

"Orel... we believe your safety is compromised where you are right now. Your magical outbursts-"

"I can control them!" He pleaded. "Please, I know I'm not mature enough and muggles can't be around magic but it's getting better, I promise-"

"This isn't normal." Daniel's voice was matter-of-fact. "And from what you've said about your homelife... we just want you to be safe. With your grandfather, during the summers until you graduate."

"I-I can't." He stammered, breathless.

"Why not?"

"Because he's dead!" Orel's voice raised. Daniel stood up straighter as the teenager stood up, gripping the table. "I can't leave here! I don't want to leave! I don't have to!"

"Orel..."

"No!" He'd never said anything so plainly before - in fact, he wasn't sure if he'd ever actually said the word like this before. "I know they don't like me being here! I know my parents don't like each other, and I know things can be bad sometimes, but I love them, and my friends are here too! I don't want to never see them again!"

"We aren't saying that," Daniel quickly affirmed. "But what has happened to you is not something we can ignore, either."

"Then help me get better!" He snapped his mouth shut, blinking away the hot tears that stung in his eyes as he swallowed. "-Help me get better. Help me stop getting so..." Scared.

"...The only way we can do that is if you have intensive one on one time with someone more skilled." His voice was patient. "It will take a lot of time, and you have to stay with that person. If you're going to insist on staying here..." He sat back, thinking a moment. "How would you feel about staying at Stephanie's for the rest of the summer?"

Orel stopped, and slowly sank to sit down. Stephanie... Stephanie was a good person. And she liked him, he thought. She didn't live far away... he would still be able to see his friends and live his life entirely as normal, just with a different place to sleep... and just for the rest of the summer. He nodded. "...I can do that."

"Good. Well then - how about starting your new training tonight?"

"Tonight? Well - gosh - I-I guess so... if you think I can." He paused. "Will she be mad?"

"No. Stephanie likes you."

The confirmation made his heart soar.

The date is August 30th. It had been a solid month and a half since Orel had gone to live with Stephanie, training in mindfulness under her. They'd sit together back-to-back for hours sometimes, meditating and breathing - other times, they'd do things that she said were supposed to help him focus, but really just felt like fun, like baking cookies or dancing to Rachael Purin records in the kitchen when neither of them could sleep at 2 AM. Orel has never been happier.

He stands on the doorstep of his old home, hand gripping the foreignly familiar doorknob. He's been like this for several anxious seconds - he doesn't know how to feel, or if this is going to go well. He's barely spoken to them since he'd left, though every time he comes over or sees them in town, it's as if nothing has changed. He wonders how, and if everything in his room is the same as he'd left it.

He opens the door.

The living room is barren, but his mother is in the kitchen, cleaning as always. Shane is playing with a BB gun on the stairs. His father, he assumes, is in his study. Orel swallows and walks in more. "Mom?"

The brunette woman doesn't look up as he comes to the doorway, still focused on scrubbing the floor. "Yes Orel?"

"Uhm... I wanted to say goodbye! I go to school tomorrow, so..."

"Oh, is your grandmother picking you up?" Her voice was the same stiff but perfect tone she always had. He smiled slightly.

"Yeah. I'll see her tomorrow. How have you been?"

She stops, sitting up on her knees. "Now, why are you asking me that? You never ask me personal questions." She smiled slightly, before looking him over - her face fell. "You look... different." He knew he'd grown a few inches, and filled out better. "Anyway - have you cleaned your room? You know I don't like to disturb your privacy!"

His chest sinks, but he doesn't say anything. Instead, he pushes on another smile. "Uh- yeah. Yeah, I have, it should be perfect for the school year!"

"Oh good!" She looks back to the floor and sees another spot in the tile, grabbing the brush to scrub it out again. "You have fun, Moral."

"I will, Mom." He stepped back from the doorway, backing up until he bumped into the couch. "...I love you a lot."

"Oh, Honey." She looks up, obviously touched by his sweetness. "Your father and I both love you enough, too."

CONNECTIONS

Last name: Orel’s name in canon is ‘Puppington,’ which isn’t a real last name; I went with ‘Priestley’ because they’re a very religious family!

Wand: Rowan wood is known for being especially attached to the pure hearted. White river monster spine cores are an American invention – especially fitting for Orel who is very ‘All American.’

Patronus is a dog because he has a dog in an episode (that may or may not be the reincarnation of Jesus, don’t ask).

He's a Hufflepuff because he is incredibly loyal - to friends, to family, and in canon above all to God.

His mother is a squib because in canon she was the ‘outcast’ of her family, who are wizards. His father, meanwhile, is a muggle like his mother, while his father was a wizard.

Living with his grandfather - refers to the eight months he spent with him at 4 years old in ‘Beforel Orel’. Everything minus balancing a checkbook is things his grandfather taught him in canon, as well.

The whole first section of his bio is set up like 'Orel's Movie Premier!' He even uses an exact quote ('looks like a puppy because he is loyal and good').

Stephanie is a character from canon - an outcast of the town because she's gay and goth, which I felt fits pretty well for her being a witch in a muggle town. Orel also has a slight crush on her that gives way into an older sister/mother-son relationship - in canon, Stephanie explicitly states she has maternal feelings for him.

Christina!! His girlfriend in canon, of course - basically everything there is the same as it is in canon, except for the fact that I toned down some of the religious aspects (which i did for the whole bio)!!

The camping trip is a canon thing. In canon, Orel and his dad go on a hunting trip where Clay ends up shooting Orel (and then messing up trying to help him), and Orel shoots a bear that comes as he's bleeding in order to keep himself safe.

Yes. Orel is absolutely naive enough to enter into a stranger's 'car' with no explanation. In canon he is literally both naive and gullible enough to repeatedly fall from an electrical tower because his friends say it won't hurt him.

Okay so I definitely didn't get down his way of speaking at all, but Daniel Stoddard is Daniel(le) Stopframe! I chose him specifically because he, like Stephanie, is an outcast of the town because he's LGBT, so I felt using his name would fit.

'I love you enough' is a canon line, though it's said by Clay instead of Bloberta.

Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Department

Known on-site artifacts include:

A record player that eats records when finished with them

An exploding rubber duckie

A music box charmed into a riddle box

An unkown artifact labeled 217B

All the items from Birtwistle's Emporium

The Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Department was founded about two decades after the British Ministry of Magic was formed, after the muggle market town of Blanford Forum was destroyed by a fire caused by a muggle stove becoming enchanted. It quickly became known that without a department to cover such cases, the wizards responsible would rarely - if ever - be brought to justice. As such Imogen Ellis, former Hufflepuff and known muggle sympathizer (and later inspiration for Arthur Weasley from the Harry Potter book series), was brought on to create a department with what little resources she was given before her death at the hands of dark wizards in 1754.

The department's fate was tumultous in the following decades as very few things had happened to require such entanglements with muggle society. The Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Department was shut down in 1803, but reopened again in 1869 when an underground explosion in Ferndale, Rhondda was found to have been caused by an exploding pickaxe. Leading the charge this time was Mervyn Scrivener, who sought to rebrand the concept of the department to focus on upholding and strengthening the Statute of Secrecy rather than keep muggles safe.

This gained the department momentum, representation and, most importantly, respect for the following years. When Mervyn stepped down in 1925 and American witch Maude Lawson rose to power, the respect for the position noticeably dwindled. That isn't to say work wasn't done - Maude, like her predecessor, was a very determined and skilled witch. But once again, the department was shafted and funds were cut and cut again until, in 1997, all that remained were Maude and her husband Kip running it out of little more than a broom closet, and a few footwork wizards running about in the world to find objects after they'd already caused damage.

This, however, was swiftly rectified by the Diamantis sisters joining the cause. Under them, the department sustained enough help and enough revenue to grow exponentially- by the early 2000s when Yolanda Diamantis took over the department, they had a proper section of the building devoted to their cause.

Currently, there are some two dozen witches and wizards working at the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Department, from interns to cursebreakers affiliated through project work with the Magical Law Enforcement Department and Gringotts, and the focus has once again shifted. Rather than destroy items as they come in, the department now seeks to 'rehabilitate' cursed items by freeing them of their curses and either returning them to muggle hands, or, more often, let them gather in the offices or the sealer room to wait for an appropriate buyer or time when such things might be needed.

There had been an uptick in muggle artifacts turn-in lately - it is suspected to be due to the popularity of technomagic, and many wizards' unfamiliarity with how technomagic works. Current methods of finding cursed items include looking on muggle websites for 'haunted' items to suss out what could be a potential threat before it acts.

Onsite, the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Department has been brought up only by two characters: Yolanda Diamantis (formerly played by Lars thanks to the Minister of Europe plotline) who runs the department and secretly funnels nastier curses out into the world through the items when they are released; and Nagito Komaeda (played by Penny) who is an intern at the department.

Pottermore Says:
I'm surprised at how little was actually on the Pottermore and in general canon stuff about the MOMAD, tbh?
Despite having a major supporting character (Arthur Weasley) working there,
we don't learn very much about it. What we do know is that it's an ill-respected position, and the office is little bigger than a broom closet. However,
as the wikia states, it's probable that this is due to the Wizarding world's distate for muggles at that point, and that it gets better after the second wizarding war.
To go with that, I made it bigger, but nonetheless the boring, easy to enter-in part of the whole lineup that it's around. I also connected Arthur Weasley specifically to the founder of the department.
