PERSONALITY

I want adventure in the great wide somewhere

Belle has always longed for something more. She has been a voracious reader since early childhood, and particularly after her mother’s death and Belle’s subsequent dive into any fictional world she could reach in order to escape the pain, she has been fascinated by tales of distant places and interesting people and all kinds of adventure. She hasn’t yet acted on these desires, because she hasn’t found anyone who would travel and explore these things with her, but her idea of the perfect relationship would involve touring the world with someone and taking in every kind of magic and every foreign place they could manage.

She has an excellent memory and has dedicated herself for years to memorizing where books are located in her family’s shop. When a customer asks where something is, she can tell them over 90% of the time.

Though she comes from a pureblood family, neither side of it bears muggles or muggleborns any ill will. Her parents encouraged her to learn about the muggle world as well as the wizarding one; her father’s job as a technomage requires him to do so, and her mother introduced her to books from both worlds as a child. The shop stocks books by both magical and muggle authors.

She often reads up on Ministry affairs and hears a lot about what’s happening there from her father. Both of them are fond of the idea of the integration, as they believe everyone can benefit from the cumulative knowledge of people from all over Europe coming together under its united Ministry.

Belle was both thrilled by the idea of the schools integrating and severely disappointed that it happened after her graduation, as that meant she couldn’t take advantage of it.

When Belle was very young and her family still lived in France, they owned horses, and she greatly misses them. She hopes to live somewhere with enough land to allow her to have more someday. In the meantime, she has an Abyssinian cat named Philippa, named after her old horse Philippe.

Belle loves dresses and can rarely be seen in anything but one of them or a skirt.

She has a passion for Shakespeare and is known to quote him at odd times, like when she says “Once more unto the breach” when walking out into bad weather.

While Belle is opinionated and far from reserved when discussing things she’s passionate about, she is incredibly shy about her feelings. She had a crush on a girl in school for about a year and was terrified to act on it, and this hasn’t improved since her graduation from Hogwarts. Since losing her mother, she’s been afraid of losing someone else she cares about, and if she doesn’t let herself fall in love, she feels she can protect herself from loss.

Both a little scared, neither one prepared

HISTORY

Isabelle, called “Belle” by those close to her, is her parents’ only child, born on 25 December, 1997. She was born in France, where both of her parents grew up, each of them attending Beauxbatons. Belle’s mother, Colette, was an author and taught her daughter to read by the age of four so that they could bond over the books Colette loved. When their family relocated to London when Belle was five, she trained herself to read longer words on signs at St. Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries during the family’s frequent trips, and when she read the words “Dragon Pox” on her mother’s medical chart, she knew what they said, just not what they meant.

Belle adored both of her parents. Her father Maurice was a technomage who loved to experiment and invent, and together with his wife, he fostered a love of learning in their young daughter. Belle helped her father in his workshop and read to her mother, who left her bedroom increasingly less as she grew frailer by the week. She didn’t completely understand what was happening yet, but she knew something was very wrong—her mother had always been bright and happy and full of life, and now she could barely walk across the house.

The final time Colette was admitted to St. Mungo’s, Belle believed it was going to last a few days at the most; the check-ups and healer visits had become more frequent and sometimes required her mother staying briefly, but she always came home. Belle’s paternal grandparents came to stay with her and her father, and she had gone home with them on the night her mother passed. Maurice returned home in tears and pulled Belle close, and he explained that Collette wouldn’t be coming home again.

Belle was seven at the time of her mother’s death, and the loss crushed her. She buried herself in the small library Colette had left behind, and she read all of the books her mother had written, determined to keep her close, if only through the worlds she had built. She also clung to her father. She sat up many nights in his workshop, listening to him talk about his developments and inventions until the soothing sound of his voice and the comfort of his presence lulled her to sleep and he carried her to her room.

Maurice has worked in the Department of Technomagic since the family’s move to London. When Belle went off to Hogwarts—sorted into Ravenclaw, to no one’s surprise—Maurice wanted a way to keep his daughter and his wife close, which led him to open and manage a bookshop in Diagon Alley on the side with the help of his parents. During holidays, Belle worked in the shop, memorizing the locations of books with ease and delighting in helping customers who loved reading as much as she did.

At school, she excelled. She received Outstandings on her O.W.L.s and N.E.W.T.s, and the Hogwarts library was like a second home to her. Her social life, however, was not as successful. In her third year, she developed a crush on a Slytherin Prefect girl she often saw in the library, but Belle was too nervous to approach the girl. She found herself attracted to both women and men, but she never managed to date in school because she was too shy to act on her feelings.

After graduation, Belle went to work officially as a shopkeeper-in-training at Rose Books, her father’s store. She made friends with the other employees and some of the customers, and she has been trying for the last three years to become more outgoing, as she’s known for a long while that the store would be passed to her. This has recently come to pass, as Maurice wanted to spend more time on his work at the Ministry and believed Belle was ready to take on the full-time position of shopkeeper.

CONNECTIONS

• Name: As Belle is French both in this form and in canon, her first, middle, and last names are French, as well. Everyone who knows her calls her Belle, though here, it’s short for Isabelle. Christine is also the lead female role in The Phantom of the Opera, whom Emmy Rossum played in the 2004 film adaptation. Desrosiers is a French surname meaning “of the rose bushes.” In canon, roses play an important part in Belle’s story. The rose given to the Beast was enchanted to lose petals until he fell in love with someone and earned her love in return. Belle’s love broke the curse placed on him as the last petal fell.

• Birthday: Belle and the Beast are shown outside playing in the snow in both Disney films, and the animated sequel centers around Christmas. Making her birthday on Christmas is both a nod to this and to A Christmas Carol, in which Ebenezer Scrooge’s long-lost love is named Belle.

• Personality: To say Belle loves books would be a gross understatement, both in canon and here. She is considered odd in canon as the only reader around, and here as well, books are a defining feature of her life and her personality. She has been a reader since early childhood and now runs the bookstore opened by her father.

• Family: Maurice is her father’s name both in canon and here. Her mother’s name, Colette, was taken from the name of Belle’s mother in ABC’s series Once Upon a Time. Belle’s mother is absent from her life in the present in several recent versions of her canon; she is unmentioned in the animated Disney film, was killed by an ogre in Once Upon a Time, and died after falling ill with the plague in the live-action 2017 film. On Bomb, Belle’s mother’s story is the closest to the 2017 version, as she fell terminally ill with Dragon Pox and died during Belle’s childhood. In canon, Maurice is an inventor, and here, he works as a technomage, blending magic and muggle technology. He has taught Belle some of his craft, like in the 2017 film, where Belle is an inventor in her own right.

• Patronus: In canon, Belle and her father have a horse named Philippe. This version of Belle had horses as a child and misses dearly them since her family’s move to the city.

• Pet: Philippe was one of her family’s horses here, as well, and Belle has a cat named Philippa after him.

• Desires: In the animated film, Belle sings about wanting more out of life than what her small village can offer. This Belle also wants to explore the world and live a grander life, and she hopes someday to find a partner to do this with her.

Talia knew in theory that this was an egregious misuse of power and that anyone who caught her looking at these documents would certainly report her. But it wasn’t her fault that one of the secretaries from the Minister’s office had gotten an owl telling her of a family emergency and that she’d been in Talia’s office delivering mail when the owl had come. Of course Talia had offered to deliver the files she’d still needed to take care of, and it wasn’t her fault that one of them included records intended for the Department of Education.

It had only been about fifteen minutes since the secretary’s hurried departure, and Talia doubted anyone was missing the files just yet. She was halfway through a report on “Grey, Jean Elaine” when she froze, wide-eyed, staring at the page before her.

“Student shows talent for non-verbal and wandless spells. She is nowhere near proficient, but she had made considerable strides over two years at Beauxbatons to continue the work we were told she began at Ilvermorny. An accident involving the death of a classmate occurred as the direct result of Grey’s dabbling in this area, which facilitated her transfer to Beauxbatons. Professors at each of the three integrated schools have been instructed to report to the Department of Education if she appears to pose a threat to herself or others.”

Talia arched a brow. Certainly this girl could become an invaluable asset to the League of Shadows, if she could be persuaded to their way of thinking. Talia could imagine the shock on her father’s face when she told him she’d recruited someone who could serve as the perfect assassin, if trained well enough. Jean couldn’t be arrested if she hadn’t raised her wand or moved her mouth and someone nearby just happened to drop dead, could she?

Talia closed the file.

A few hours later, she stood in the dining hall at Beauxbatons, having talked her way in on ‘Official Ministry Business.’ She scanned the crowd for the red-haired girl she’d seen in the photo attached to Jean’s file, and when she caught sight of the girl at a table nearby, Talia studied her. Jean was a bit shorter than she’d imagined—small for someone who was supposedly so strong. She watched as Jean laughed and chatted with the girls at her table and, in a moment when she apparently suspected no one was watching, she gave her a hand a slight wave and a water pitcher moved to fill her glass.

She’s brilliant, Talia thought to herself. At this age? Imagine her in five years… in ten…

Much to Talia’s delight, Jean finished her meal within a few minutes and started for the doors. Talia stood beside them, trying to look casual, to look like she belonged. She slipped a card from her pocket, and when Jean passed, Talia reached out and gripped her wrist with a firm but hopefully nonthreatening touch.

“Excuse me, are you Jean Grey?” she asked, her tone saccharine and her smile uncharacteristically warm.

The girl nodded, raising a brow but doing a fair job of controlling her expression otherwise. “Have we met?”

Talia shook her head. She relaxed her grip on Jean’s wrist and retracted her hand. “No. I’ve heard nothing but good things about you, though. I work for the Ministry,” she added quickly, hoping that was sufficient to explain how she’d heard things she shouldn’t have. “The Department of Education,” she lied. “I’ve been told you’re an excellent student, and I’d love to meet with you if you ever happen to be in London. I have a job opportunity to discuss with you for when you’re out of school.”

Though Jean had looked somewhat suspicious before, she visibly relaxed, and a smile slid onto her lips. “Oh. Well, thank you. That sounds lovely, Miss…”

“Talia.” Smiling as pleasantly as she could manage, Talia extended a hand to shake Jean’s. She then offered the girl the card, which bore her name, Leviathan’s logo, and her contact information. “Please write to me the next time you’re in the area. Or I could come to you, whichever you prefer. I’d love to have tea and talk things over.”

Jean nodded slowly. She looked down at the card and then slipped it into her pocket. “I’ll be sure to contact you. I have to get to a music club meeting, but it was very nice to meet you, Talia.” She smiled once more and then slipped through the open doors.

Talia stared at the spot from which she had disappeared, smirking.

PERSONALITY

Gwen is brilliant and studious, and she is constantly looking for ways to broaden her intellectual horizons. She reads constantly and enjoys developing new potions, specifically ones designed to heal. She still deals with recurring pain from a devastating spinal injury sustained during her time as an Auror, and she is determined to develop something that will both eliminate this side-effect in herself and prevent it from happening to people who have had similar injuries.

Since dealing with such a traumatic experience and leaving law enforcement, Gwen has secretly doubted her ability as a duelist. There’s a small voice at the back of her mind that occasionally tells her she wasn’t good enough for the job. She’s confided in Peter about this, and he’s good at talking her out of the bad mood the feeling puts her in.

Gwen has an irrational fear of goblins that she tries to hide, which was caused by the mask the wizard who almost killed her was wearing. Though she knows it wasn’t a real goblin who attacked her, the last thing she saw before falling off a building was the mask, and it has been burned into her mind ever since.

She has a collection of rocks and precious stones that she started as a child and brought with her to Hogwarts, both when she studied there and when she was hired to teach. It has grown considerably over the years and is currently spread over several shelves in her office.

When she found out she was pregnant, she was terrified—she feared she wouldn’t be a good mother. But as soon as the twins were born, she fell in love with motherhood, and she takes every opportunity to spend time with her children.

She’s still as head-over-heels in love with Peter as she was when they first got together back in school. They regularly go on dates and take trips when Gwen gets time off from Hogwarts.

Gwen has loved cats all her life and currently has a Bengal cat named Ben, after Peter’s uncle.

She can’t stand the taste of Firewhisky, but she enjoys Butterbeer and is a fan of sweet wines.

HISTORY

Gwen was born on February 20, 1977 to George and Helen Stacy, and from her earliest memories, she was an inquisitive child. Her mother was a Muggleborn witch, and she passed a vast number of books on to Gwen from her parents, including quite a few related to science. Gwen devoured everything she could read about the natural world, and she was eager to put it into practice; she scoured the forest near her house to identify the types of trees by their leaves, and she began collecting whatever rocks and gemstones she could get her hands on. She also adored biology and chemistry. Though her parents didn’t think she was old enough to try the experiments she read about, at least not by herself, she was fascinated by the way ingredients could combine and form something completely new.

When she started at Hogwarts, she was sorted into Ravenclaw, to no surprise from her family. With so many new subjects to study, Gwen was in paradise. She immediately developed a love for Potions, which she saw as the magical equivalent of chemistry that she could use to create and experiment. She excelled in her studies and served as a prefect, and it was at about this time that she began debating what she would do after her graduation from Hogwarts. Her father was a decorated Auror, and he made no secret that he believed her intellect would serve her well in his field. For several years, she kept this idea at the back of her mind, but it wasn’t until she met Peter Parker that she decided it was something she wanted to pursue.

Peter was Gwen’s first and only love. A Gryffindor prefect with a talent for Defense Against the Dark Arts, Peter was brave, intelligent, and everything Gwen pictured when she imagined the perfect husband. He was determined to train as an Auror after school, and Gwen decided to follow this path along with him and began to train in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement after she graduated, much to her father’s delight. Gwen and Peter pushed each other to reach their full potential and often practiced dueling, and she still has faint scars from this period caused by a few rogue spells.

When Gwen was twenty, her father was severely injured on a mission by a dark wizard in a green goblin mask who was terrorizing Diagon Alley. The man was flinging curses into the crowd, and he’d managed to kill a pair of innocent bystanders. George’s leg was broken he was suffering from internal bleeding, and he sent his patronus to the Ministry to call for backup. Gwen and Peter rushed to aid him. During the ensuing battle, Gwen followed the wizard onto the roof of a tall shop building in an attempt to subdue him.

He blasted her off the roof. Peter made a split-second decision to try to save her with Wingardium Leviosa, and though the spell halted her fall, the momentum of her descent and the sudden stop caused immense damage to her spine. As soon as the masked man was incapacitated, Gwen was rushed to St. Mungo’s along with her father, where she stayed for several weeks to be treated for vertebral fractures and nerve damage. She eventually healed, for the most part, while her father passed away from his injuries. While Peter was inspired by Gwen’s near-death experience to double his efforts in the law enforcement field, Gwen no longer wished to enter the line of fire. Instead, her passion for the field of Potions was renewed by her desire to help develop more effective remedies than the ones she had been given, which left her with recurring spinal pain that she hasn’t been able to completely rid herself of since the incident.

She worked in a developmental position at Leviathan for a little over a year before a teaching apprenticeship opened at Hogwarts. Gwen applied immediately, and she began the apprenticeship a few months before her twenty-third birthday. She and Peter married shortly thereafter. When the Potions professor retired, Gwen moved up to fill his post, where she has been ever since. At twenty-five, she gave birth to twins—a son and daughter, who currently attend Hogwarts. After eighteen years of teaching, Gwen has recently taken on the additional job of Hogwarts Deputy Headmistress. She is thrilled to have the chance to meet more students and encourage them to love learning as much as she does now that Hogwarts has been integrated with Durmstrang and Beauxbatons. As an ex-Auror, she isn’t as sold on what the consolidation of power means from a political standpoint, but she welcomes the chance to give her students more educational opportunities.

CONNECTIONS

• Name: Gwen’s full name and nickname are derived from canon. She has adopted Peter’s surname since their marriage, as she would have if she had survived in canon and married him.

• Personality/Profession: In canon, Gwen matches Peter in intelligence, and they met while at college while Gwen was majoring in science. Here, Gwen loves all forms of science as well as Potions. Initially, this was because she found it comparable to chemistry, which she studied in books passed down from her Muggle grandparents. However, Gwen’s love for Potions now transcends this comparison and has become her passion.

• History: Gwen’s father in canon was a police officer, and here, he was an Auror. Both versions of him were killed in the line of duty. Gwen and Peter fell in love in college, and she didn’t know he was Spider-Man. She was killed when the Green Goblin dropped her off a building and Peter tried to catch her, accidentally snapping her neck. However, in an alternate comic timeline, Peter died instead, and Gwen fought crime as Spider-Woman. The two timelines have been somewhat merged here, where Gwen served as an Auror with Peter briefly until she was nearly killed by a dark wizard in a green goblin mask. She sustained lasting damage even years after she was released from St. Mungo’s. Also in canon (in a huge retcon), Gwen gave birth to twins (a boy and girl) fathered by the Green Goblin shortly before her death. In order to fit Gwen’s personality better, this version of her went on to marry Peter after her near-death experience, and the two of them had twins together.

• Wand: According to the HP Wiki: “Willow is an uncommon wand wood with healing power, and their ideal owner is often has some (usually unwarranted) insecurity, however well they may try and hide it.” Gwen works to develop potions, specifically ones that will help others to recover more fully than she did from similar injuries. She’s a bit insecure about her capability after her injury during her brief time as an Auror. “The willow wands there have consistently selected those of greatest potential, rather than those who feel they have little to learn.” Gwen has had a passion learning for her whole life and hopes to pass that on to her students. Regarding the core, the Wiki says: “Consistent magic, bonds strongly to first user.” This is both a reference to Gwen’s consistent desire to advance her magic and a nod to Gwen being Peter’s first true love in canon.

• Patronus: Her patronus, a spider, represents her alternate timeline self who became Spider-Woman.

• Other: Gwen worked briefly for Leviathan, which is owned by Ra’s al Ghul, the father of my other character Talia. It was too long ago for Talia to remember, so they would have no reason to interact with one another.

• Note: I am more than willing to change my interpretation of Peter if someone wants to play him and rewrite whatever is needed.

Talia glanced over her shoulder every few seconds as she made her way through the Ministry’s library. A voice at the back of her mind whispered that she was likely to draw more attention to herself this way, and she pulled in a long breath and tried to calm down. No one had to know why she was here, after all. She was a Ministry employee, and one from the Department of Mysteries, for God’s sake. If anyone was expected to be looking up obscure and unsettling things, an Unspeakable certainly fit the criteria. It wasn’t that she feared the judgment of any of these people. She simply couldn’t afford word getting out about what she was using the Ministry’s resources to research down on Level Nine.

Her eyes swept over the tables and the people clustered around them, bent over old books. She didn’t let herself stare for too long, because she didn’t want to chance drawing anyone’s attention. She couldn’t see anyone she imagined herself having a moderately interesting conversation with, and she didn’t have time to waste being bored.

By the time she reached the rear of the library, the crowds had thinned. She was surrounded by shelves and books that smelled like they hadn’t been opened in at least half a century. She’d visited the corner she sought on a few occasions, but it was typically closer to the end of the day, when she had a smaller chance of running into anyone who might have more power than she. The Lazarus Potion was still missing a few key ingredients, however, and this gnawed at her from the moment she woke to the moment she slept, as she knew it would until the potion was complete.

Talia turned right and made her way to the corner she knew housed the books she needed to search for answers. Her heart leapt into her throat when she realized that someone else had beaten her to the corner. Someone in green.

She swallowed and took a step toward the shelf, running her index finger over the spine of a book at random and not bothering to read its title as her mind scrambled for an explanation for her presence.

Talia has a close but tense relationship with her father. Ra’s is a potions prodigy and ex-Healer who founded Leviathan, which is now a multinational corporation responsible for countless potions and cures for magical diseases. In secret, he founded the League of Shadows, a group of assassins that has managed to stay under the radar but is growing steadily stronger.

Ra’s is a pureblood supremacist who is obsessed with eliminating “imperfections” in the magical population, and if this leads to wiping out a significant portion of that population, why not? He has been trying to groom his children into the perfect heirs their whole lives, and his only son was born a squib, which made him unworthy in his father’s eyes. His eldest daughter, Nyssa, wanted nothing to do with the company or the League and has left to forge her own path. This left Ra’s with Talia, his third child, who has spent her life trying to make herself worthy of their family and mold herself in her father’s image.

FC Suggestions: Jason Isaacs (played him in animated form, would love to see him but it’s absolutely okay if not), Liam Neeson, Alexander Siddig

By all rights, as the firstborn, Dusan should’ve been the one to inherit Leviathan and the League of Shadows, but because of factors out of his control, the magic of his two pureblood parents did not reach him.

Because I can’t find any appearances of Dusan in animated form, the spirit is open, as long as he’s a squib.
