endless possibilities and infinite outcomes
Jean had never really had trouble with her coursework. She was a highly dedicated student, and she devoted herself to making sure she maintained her top marks. Still, she had never been fond of group projects. In her experience in elementary school and then at Ilvermorny, she had almost always been the one tasked with doing the majority of the work, and to little reward. She’d never needed that extra degree of stress, but she’d always managed to handle it fairly well.

Since her arrival at Beauxbatons, however, she had been pleasantly surprised by just how different the work ethic was, at least among her class. The Elites knew what they were doing, for the most part; even if that meant they knew vastly different areas well, the students still had expertise in one area or another, apart from the ones who had gotten in only through their wealth. Takumi in particular was one student Jean admired, and she was glad she’d gotten paired with him for their latest project. She knew she wasn’t likely to have an experience like the ones that had made her dislike group projects for years.

She sat at her typical desk in their classroom, waiting for him to arrive and reading in the meantime.

Goddamnit , he was late

Takumi was furious at himself as he ran down through the halls, knowing he was acting exactly like the kind of person he'd be yelling at if he was still a Prefect.

He should have known better then to schedule this after Quidditch practice, but he hadn't thought it'd run over. He was still getting used to how Quidditch disuprted his schedule even though it was one of the most fun things he'd ever done in school.

He had run back to the dorm just to grab the books he needed for helping his fellow student out in studying, not even sparing a moment to change back into his normal student attire, or to even brush his disheveled hair, or do any magic on the bruise that was forming on his arm from a rogue bludger... really doing any of those things didn't occur to him until he ran into the classroom he was supposed to meet the girl in.

He found himself panting, as he nearly collapsed into the seat next to her, "Oh Jean I'm sorry, I'm so sorry. The drills were intense today, I lost track of time." He was panting after almost every word, and he realized this was the first time since he woke up this morning he'd been able to sit down and breathe for a second. He grimaced as he caught his reflection in a stray cabinet in the classroom, realizing what a mess he looked like....god he probably smelled bad too, its not like he'd gotten the chance to shower after practice, and he found himself blushing, "I uhh... so what do you want to get done today?" He should have come in here with a plan, but really his mind was still on Quidditch and he needed a bit of a refresher.

Jean had just managed to finish the chapter in the novel she’d been making her way through this week when she heard hurried footsteps and labored breathing, and she looked up as Takumi seemed to fall into the seat beside her. He looked completely exhausted, and she felt a surge of guilt for adding to his stress, no matter how accidentally. She’d hoped this would be a good time to meet to work on their project, but considering she was terrible at keeping up with the schedules for their school’s clubs and teams unless she was on them, she knew she should’ve paid more attention, at least to the Quidditch schedule. She loved attending the games, but she’d never been overly athletically inclined, and so she preferred to keep to the stands.

“Oh, no, it’s completely fine. I’m sorry they put you through so much.” She couldn’t imagine the drills being fun on a normal day, let alone when they were more intense than usual. When he asked what she wanted to get done, she closed the book she’d been reading and paused to consider. The project was for Defense Against the Dark Arts, and she knew they were supposed to be researching a topic they wanted to present. They had been told to find a particularly dangerous magical creature or entity and examine it, including an explanation of how they would subdue it, if put in a position to do so. “Well, maybe we could get our creature picked and at least start brainstorming how we might defeat it? I’m not sure how easy it will be to come up with a concrete answer, but we could think about it.”

Takumi couldn't bear to hear the girl apologize, "You're fine! You're fine trust me! We're just preparing for the next game is all. They don't like me leaving the pitch until I've caught the Snitch, and some days it can be harder then others. And it was kind of windy today. I crashed a bit. Got hit by a bludger at one point...thats just how it is." He didn't mean to sound like he was complaining or anything, if anything it felt good to have something to do to fill the void of losing his prefect duties, and having all that free time. Takumi never really knew what to do with free time.

But it was time to get to work. He found himself flipping through the book, as he heard her ask him what they wanted t do. "I'm going to be honest the only creature I know how to subdue is a pegasus. And they're much too docile to do for this project." Supposedly. Takumi knew that an upset pegasus could do a lot of damage. He guessed they were left out of the project because they couldn't eat humans. "Do you have any experience with anything?"

Jean’s cheeks burned as Takumi dismissed the apology. She appreciated it, certainly, but she couldn’t shake feeling a little bad about the timing of their meeting. She listened intently to what had happened at practice. She found Quidditch fascinating, and she had a great deal of respect for the players—especially student players, who balanced it on top of everything else they were dealing with. “I’m sure you’ll play fantastically at the next game. And oh… are you okay? The bludger hits look so rough from the stands, I can’t imagine how they must feel.”

She smiled at the idea of doing their project on a pegasus. “Yeah, I can see that being hard to write about. They’re such lovely creatures it’s hard to imagine having to fight them in that context.” Jean considered for a moment when he asked about her experience. Aside from her Care of Magical Creatures classes, she hadn’t dealt with many species, and she tried to recall which ones those classes had taught her about that might help here. “Well… there’s always Acromantulas, I suppose. I’ve only ever seen little ones, but that was more than enough. Not a fan. Or, I suppose dragons would be interesting to research. I’ve always wanted to see one but haven’t had the chance. Is there anything you’d like to look into more?”
