An hour before the sun was about to set, Tobias slipped out one of the back doors of the estate after checking to ensure nobody was watching. As much as he loved each and every one of them, they did have the tendency to be nosey and overbearing. They’d been pestering Tobias ever since he had arrived. Not that he blamed them – he looked and felt awful. It was something he was getting use to though. Every month he’d get sick right before a full moon and this was no different. Feeling ill made him cranky, and he really just wanted to be left alone. But leaving now wasn’t a matter of what he wanted, but what they needed. He had selfishly put them all in danger by coming here.
<P>
The cold greeted him like a slap in the face as he stepped outside. The spring temperatures were actually pleasant during the day, warm enough that a light jacket would suffice for those accustomed to the climate. Once the sun set though, the temperature still dropped below freezing on most nights which still made it dangerous. At least the sky was clear, lacking any threat of rain or snow. Tobias had made sure to grab a thicker coat for the morning when he’d have to come trudging back. Already he was looking forward to being back in the manor where he could return to his favorite spot by one of the fire places. Then he could sleep off the rest of the ill-feelings before returning to Durmstrang.
<P>
Tobias glanced over his shoulder, paranoia still high even though he knew nobody would be following him. He had already ducked into the trees just incase someone had spotted him, but now he was at the edge of what transitioned into the flat moors. It was isolated around the moors, which was just what he needed. Nobody around to hurt. While the wolfsbane potions helped him control himself during the full moons now, he was still paranoid about being around anyone. No amount of reassurance would ever change that. It was better to be safe than sorry and he already had enough guilt to last a lifetime and a half. Tobias sighed, pausing briefly to look to the west. It was only a matter of minutes now before the moon would appear. The sun had set and it was only getting darker which made moving around nearly impossible. It’d be fine once the moon rose and he transformed though. All that was left to do was wait.
<P>
Transforming was by far the most painful part of the entire experience and there was nothing that compared. No amount of mental preparation ever helped. Bones crunched, twisted and expanded as his body shifted into that of a wolf. To most, he’d appear to be just that. The deception was in the small details: a larger body, a slightly shorter snout and eyes. His fur was mottled greys and vibrant reds with contrasting white patches around his throat. Typical colors for any wolf found in the area. Tobias shook his body and took a few steps to gain his footing. His vision had improved with the shift and now he was ready to take on the night. To roam the moors like he’d never been able to. Tilting back his head, he released a long, single howl that filled the otherwise silent landscape. Then he was off, bounding over the brush and searching for anything that might catch his eye.
<p>

The fire crackled, filling the otherwise silent house. Tobias was 8. A thin child, with long legs and a wild mess of wavy dark brown hair. His eyes opened briefly, just long enough to look over at his grandma. She sat in a rocking chair nearby, knitting as she rocked back and forth. The only noise that emitted from her movements was the soft jingle of her silver bracelets on her right wrist. After a moment, she must have felt the childs eyes on her and so she looked over. ”Sleep, Tobias,” she urged softly. Over the years she had never once raised her voice at her grandson. Not even when his high levels of energy and enthusiasm surely drove her mad. Somehow, she always had a smile stretched across her lips. With a soft sigh, the young boy closed his eyes and pulled his blanket closer. Sleeping infront of the fireplace was his favorite place.
<P>
”When is mother coming back?” Tobias was too young to fully comprehend that his mother had left him. It was for the best. Sariah was wild at heart and uncontrollable. The type of person who couldn’t sit still or be held down by anyone for very long. That was how Tobias arrived. A fling with a friend, who quickly turned tail as soon as he caught wind of the pregnancy. At age 6, Sariah left one night and never returned, leaving her mother to take care of Tobias.
<P>
The elderly woman reached her hand out and ran her fingers through the childs unruly hair. ”You have me. I’ll take care of you,” she whispered, soothing his question for what was probably the hundredth time.
<P>
The family dynamic of the Valeri’s was strange. Even as a young child, Tobias could tell that something was off. The table was full but the room was rather silent. Well, aside from the children who were all talking amongst themselves. As a child, Tobias couldn’t fathom what the awkward air was all about. There always felt like there was some sort of secret between them that left Tobias feeling fairly left out. Luckily, the cousins about his age hardly seemed to care about whatever was troubling the adults and treated him no different. The rest of the family never treated him poorly. They just never seemed to open up to him like he wanted them to. No barrage of questions could get them to elaborate on short one-worded answers.
<P>
The questions Tobias had only grew over the years. The tipping point was the letter he received from Durmstrang. Now, he sat at a table outside at a coffee shop. His great aunt Marissa had agreed to meet up with him to explain things that his grandmother couldn’t. His legs swung beneath the chair he sat at as he tried to burn off excessive nervous energy. Tobias was excited, but nervous none-the-less. It took all his self-control not to interrupt her as she sat across from him and began to explain everything. She must have noticed all that energy because she scooted a plate of fries at him to give him something to do while she talked.
<P>
One fry after another was quickly shoved into his mouth like they were candy. His great-grandfathers first marriage was to a muggle. Tobias interrupted there, asking what the word meant. He scratched his head in confusion while it was explained. After a few years, the marriage fell apart. The family gathered it was due to the pressure of trying to keep the magical world a secret from his wife. Tobias interrupted again, ”Why didn’t he just tell her?” His great aunt sighed, waving her hands in the air and telling him that things just weren’t that easy when it came to these sorts of things. She told him that after his great-grandfather came back, he eventually remarried and had three more children with a pureblood. Of course, then she had to explain what ‘pureblood’ meant because Tobias interrupted her immediately.
<P>
So the story trickled back to Tobias’ grandmother. She was the black sheep of the family, which, kept in touch with her despite being half-blood. They had to after her daughter was invited to Durmstrang. Tobias’ great aunt had little information regarding how school went for Sariah. She reassured him though that the family as a whole always tested into the second set. A few went into the first set, but typically they were what most would call ‘average’. Tobias interrupted, wanting a full explanation of what she meant by ‘sets’, which had also been mentioned in the letter he had received inviting him to attend the school. ”Ohhhh,” he chimed in, before shoving another fry into his mouth.
<P>
”It’s a good thing you were invited to Durmstrang. Not at all surprising though, especially since your father attended there as well. That’s where your parents met,” She told Tobias. He poked and prodded her while devouring the remainder of his food, trying to pry out as much information as he could. She was the only one he could dig answers out of, after all. After the food was gone, Tobias was sent on his way to return home with what felt like the weight of the worlds dumped onto his shoulders. Despite the apprehension, his grandmother decided to let him attend the school. Especially after numerous spontaneous items shattering during his childish tantrums mixed with uncontrollable magic.
<P>
The magical world was just that – magical. To young Tobias, everything was overwhelming. From the first day, he knew it would be a hard place to fit in. The people, he found, were hard to win over. He tried to make friends the first day, racing up to people and introducing himself. The majority of them didn’t seem too keen on talking to him though. Even so, he never let it get to him. It was just the way his personality was: chipper, excited and full of energy. The first person he tried to talk to brushed him off, telling him “beat it, kid”. Tobias huffed, following after the older student and repeating the question. All he needed to know was where one of the classrooms was. ”What’s your name? My names Tobias!” Maybe if he introduced himself the guy would be friendlier? Unfortunately, all Tobias got was a harsh push towards a corridor as a result. While he stumbled, some other students called from the end of a hall, ”Tsume! Lets go!” The boy, Tsume, mumbled and stalked down the hall after the group.
<P>
Making friends was hard and Tobias never quite understood why he struggled so hard. Well, he did have a certain affinity towards accidentally upsetting people. Like the current situation he had found himself in where he had slipped and crashed into someone. Something had gotten broken, he couldn’t even see what it was because the victim had wheeled on him and was brandishing his wand in Tobias’ face. The surprise and fear caused the younger student to freeze in place and just wait for what was inevitably coming at him. He had no flight instinct. Nothing in his head was screaming ‘fight back’ or ‘defend yourself’. Everything was blank. The expression was wide eyed, a startled and classic deer-in-headlights expression. And just as the students wrist started to move, Tobias felt a rough shove against his shoulder that sent him stumbling away. ”Leave the kid alone,” a familiar voice growled. Tobias spun around, coming face to face with Tsume. The other student immediately backed off, glaring and mumbling as they retreated.
<P>
That was how Tsume became stuck with Tobias. Anytime Tobias caught sight of the older student he would go running up to him. ”Looks like you made a new friend Tsume,” the others in the group joked. They never put up a fuss with him tagging along like Tsume did though. Hige just ruffled his hair and teased him. Cheza all but smothered him in affection and welcomed him without hesitation. Kyler was just about as rough around the edges as Tsume but Tobias never let that bother him either. Just like with Tsume, he realized quickly that Kyler was just as quick to jump in to defend a friend when needed. Collectively, their personalities were all over the place and yet somehow they meshed together into an inseparable group over the years.
<P>
Four years came and went, and then suddenly his friends were graduating and leaving him behind. It was bitter sweet. The spot they all studied together at was suddenly quiet and lonely. There was nobody there to encourage him to finish his papers. Nobody to help him with charms – which he wasn’t entirely grand at in the beginning because of his over enthusiasm. Then he struggled with dueling because while he wasn’t shy, he was reluctant towards casting spells at anyone. Confrontation in general sent Tobias running the opposite direction unless it was his friends needing a hand. Now that they were gone, he had slunk back into his fleeting ways. Thankfully other subjects, like transfiguration, came much easier to Tobias.
<P>
Tobias was out for a walk late at night during the summer before seventh year. The moon was high above, full and radiating light. It was so bright out that the lights in the street weren’t even necessary. Walks like these helped clear his thoughts when he had trouble sleeping. The impending final year at school had him worried. What was he going to do when he was finished? There were ideas, of course. Auror was out of the question – he still hated confrontations. Teaching was a potential – Cheza was certainly enjoying her time as an apprentice for teaching. ”I have no ideeeaaaa,” he whined, dragging his hands over his face. The leaves crunched under his feet as he passed along the edge of the nearby forest. Home was but a mile or so away – he never went terribly far.
<P>
There was a rustle of bushes and the sound of rushing footsteps. Tobias barely had time to twist his torso around to look behind him before a weight slammed into him and sent him flying into the ground. The explosion of pain shot through his entire back but it was his forearm felt like something had latched onto it. When his eyes reopened, Tobias was greeted by bright golden eyes staring at him just inches from his face. The creature – some sort of large dog, his brain pieced together, had grabbed onto his forearm. Tobias panicked, kicking a leg out at the underside of the creature. The foot made contact with ribs hard enough that it yelped, releasing him and gave Tobias enough time to scramble back to his feet. There was just enough of an opening for a well-aimed spell that stunned the creature and gave the teenager the time he needed to make a run for home.
<P>
Tobias somehow convinced himself that the attack was just a dog attack despite the lingering paranoia that it might have been something else. The bite on his arm healed, although it was slow, and over the weeks it turned into scar tissue. Everything was normal up until the days before the next full moon. Then came the aches, pains and general ill-feeling and still Tobias made no connection. His grandmother forced him into bed rest, telling him it was likely the flu that was going around. It all sounded logical up until the night. While sitting in bed, drinking some sort of disgusting concoction that his grandma had given him, Tobias let his eyes wander to the window. The realization dawned on him and the glass slipped out of his hand that was suddenly shaking. Every muscle in his body quivered as the transformation began. The last thing he remembered was his grandma walking in and asking, ”I heard something break, are you okay?”
<P>
Then everything went black.
<P>
When Tobias woke up, he wasn’t at home. Somehow, he had ended up in the nearby forest. The sun was shining overhead, causing him to flinch when he opened his eyes. Additionally, he had a pounding headache and everything ached. Maybe even more than the last few days. When stumbling to his feet, he realized that all of his clothing was covered in mud. That wasn’t what bothered him though. It was the blood splattered everywhere that caused his heart rate to spike and a frantic search for the source. Minutes passed and nothing was found, even after he took out his wand and cleaned it all up. If the Ministry wanted to send him a letter yelling at him for using a cleaning spell then they could but there was no way he was walking around looking like a walking murder scene.
<P>
The walk home was slow and painful. His body ached and his mind raced as it tried to piece together what had happened. The reality of the situation hit him like a ton of bricks when he got to his street and saw numerous police cars and other vehicles outside his house. Tobias had to fight the urge not to turn and run as he slowly dragged himself forward towards the house. ”I live here..” he mumbled to the officers outside. He felt numb as he was directed towards someone by the front door who introduced himself as someone from the Ministry. The man informed him there had been an attack in the home, one that may be related to a string of recent werewolf attacks in the area. Tobias felt lightheaded as he grabbed onto the side of the house and lost all of his stomach contents into the flower garden. Suddenly he was thankful he was wearing a long sleeve sweater that hid the evidence that would have connected him to the crime.
<P>
His grandmother’s death was covered up by the Ministry. The muggles in the area were given the story that she had passed away from a heart attack. The house was cleaned up, restored so no evidence existed of the attack. Everything was left to Tobias in terms of the property. Since he was underaged, his custody immediately went to the first family member that would take him in. On paper it was his cousin Hannah, but in reality he more or less took up residence at Kyler's estate. A few days after the incident, Tobias returned home from the funeral home with a bag of jewelry that had belonged to his grandmother. Dropping himself onto the stoop of the house, he picked through the contents and pulled out some large silver bangle bracelets that she had always worn. For a few minutes he twirled them around in his fingers before sliding them onto his right arm. The four bracelets were thick enough when worn all at once that they covered up the bite scar on his forearm. Perfect.
<P>
With the summer over just two weeks after the incident, Tobias returned to school. Quieter and much more withdrawn, he made a beeline for the headmaster just days after the year started. Some secrets could be held but he knew this wasn’t one of them. Someone had to know. Someone that could help him and keep other people safe from himself. Most of the story and the truth was left out for self-preservation. When it was all said and done, Tobias left the office with a sigh of relief. He had walked in assuming he would get kicked out just because of his condition. Instead he was leaving with a promise that the school would help as much as they could. They’d keep it a secret as long as they could so he could at the very least finish the year without added stress.
<P>
And that was all he could ask for because the stress of keeping his grandmothers murder a secret was already taxing enough. It was just as physically and mentally draining as the transformations he went through every month.
<P>
One thing was certain though: Tobias was struggling.

<h1>CONNECTIONS</h1>
The most important connection is Toboe and his grandmother. In the show he was raised by an elderly woman who he calls “granny”. One of the flashbacks he has is him sleeping infront of the fireplace at the house, before being called to dinner and being overly excited that he knocks her over and accidentally chokes her to death. Hence the tie in for the accidental death as well. In the show, she wears the silver bracelets and then Toboe wears them after she dies so that’s a connection as well.
<P>
The wand I chose cedar wood because it carries the potential for its owner to be a frightening adversary, which often comes as a shock to those who thoughtlessly challenge them. In the show, while Toboe is mostly timid and stays away from fights, he also has his shining moments of strength. The kid literally takes down a huge walrus when the other three couldn’t. The pack is quite literally ‘wtf just happened’ when he suddenly goes kill mode on the walrus.
<P>
The wolf connection is sort of obvious here. I didn’t want to just have him be an animagus, so I went for the werewolf route. It was an interesting way to result in his grandmas death so I went for it. He's literally so timid and unsure of himself that he'd hide a problem till it literally blows up in his face.
<P>
As far as personality goes, he’s very loyal and energetic. In the show he’s the youngest, so I made sure to have him a few years younger than Kyler. They call him “kid” and “runt”. He literally just makes friends with Tsume by following him around and as a result he ends up meeting the rest of the gang. So that part of his history is also literally taken straight out of the show. They just adopt him and eventually become very fond and protective of him. They save his butt from getting into trouble on numerous occasions in the show so that’s all in the history as well.
