I don't want to be left alone
Bruce was in a rather strange place right now. He was in pain and he still hadn't managed to cope with Gertrude's loss. She shouldn't be gone. It wasn't fair. When he had appeared in Drumstang he hand't known where he was headed. He couldn't muster enough concentration to study at the moment and classes were over for the day. Nor had he arranged to meet Ed today. However, when he found himself near the dueling grounds he nodded to himself. That could help? Maybe? He entered and looked around. Nobody he had talked to before and he felt particurlarly ... shy today which was a miracle all by itself.

He sighed. He did need to talk to someone if he hoped to blow off some steam, but he didn't feel like it. It was a shame that the room was nearly empty today and that nobody he knew was around, but given the time of the year it wasn't particurlarly surprising. It was inconvenient but not surprising.

He moved to the side in the last second as a wand was sent flying through the air and contemplated leaving. He always found solace in reading and in being alone so maybe he could try that. Or look for Ed... He moved to turn around and nearly bumped on a girl he had never seen before in his life. She was wearing the drumstang uniform. Looking at her a bit closer he thought about his earlier statement. The face seemed familiar but he couldn't put a name to it. An A name... yes it was an A name, but he couldn't remember more than that. "Heey, hi... I'm sorry" he mumbled hoping that that would be the end of it and that she wouldn't start yelling at him for distrurbing her or something. The last thing he needed right about now was someone to start yelling at him.

I wasn't made to fall in line

Astrid never missed a club meeting. Her Saturday evenings were reserved ever since she joined the Dueling Club two years ago. It was every bit of a routine as it was to attend her classes. However, if there ever were a time Astrid wished she had simply stayed in her dorm, it was now. One would never assume the Dueling Club to be as successful as it truly was at first glance. The room was near empty, understandably so given the time of year, but empty nonetheless. And empty meant not worth her time.

She exhaled slowly as she watched one duel session that was more simple practice than anything else. Astrid wanted a challenge, but it was quickly becoming apparent that she would not find that here. Not today, at least. She would find something else to benefit her time. Astrid turned on her heel to make her way towards the door, but quickly found herself maneuvering to avoid getting shoulder-checked by a boy who seemed lost. A spark of irritation jolted through her. It would take a mindless individual to find themselves lost in the dungeons and she did not have the patience nor temper to help a first year back to their room.

A lone brow quirked curiously at his stammered greeting and apology. Astrid quickly assessed him to jog her memory. He was familiar now that she took the time to discover as such. She familiarized herself with all individuals that were in the club, making mental notes of those that seemed like a challenge and those that did not. This boy fell in the latter category. However, she gave pause at simply exiting the impromptu conversation. While she couldn't remember his name, she could at least remember this solemn attitude wasn't much like himself. He was more bubble than anything if memory served her correctly. Her lips set in a thin line of concentration then parted to make way for two words:

"Let's duel."

It wasn't spoken as a request, but a challenge. Truthfully, it wasn't exactly what she had wanted to say but this was a realm she was more comfortable with. Astrid was the type of person to fall back on physical aggression than to offer mental support. Sure, any other person would have asked if he was okay out of propriety but not Astrid. She would let their wands do the talking instead.

I don't want to be left alone
He didn't know what he had expected the girl to say but a challenge to a duel wasn't it. And it really was a challenge, not a request or a suggestion. However it did seem like a good idea. After all he needed a way to get his nerves to calm down. And that was a way... After all that was why he had been here hadn't it? He nodded at her. Let's. But it's a bit of an overreaction isn't it? was all that he said towards her, surprising himself as he offered a small attempt for a joke.

He still couldn't remember her name but he hadn't come here to talk after all so it didn't really matter did it now? He moved at an open enough space and bowed to her as was costumaty for duels. Expeliamus! he chanted deciding to kick start the duel with an easy enough and useful spell.

I wasn't made to fall in line

She hardly blinked in reaction to his joke, but rather paced herself from him and assumed the position for initiating a duel. The coiled nerves in her body began to relax as she bowed and righted herself into a proper stance. Astrid thrived in high pressure scenarios, whether it be an OWL or a duel. It made her the perfect candidate to become an Auror as intended, but she liked to take it step-by-step to prove herself worthy. After all, if she couldn't beat this small fry here (whose name still evaded her), then how could she possibly capture criminals?

It was he to make the first move and she was quick to raise her wand and cast a quick shield to deflect the offensive spell. Perhaps he wasn't quite as much of a pushover as she first thought. One corner of her lips quirked up in a smirk. Astrid straightened her spine and with a flick of her wand, she exclaimed, "Stupefy!"

I don't want to be left alone
Bruce hardly noticed the lack of reaction on her part if he wanted to be honest. That didn't sound very nice on his part but it was true. His mind was occupied with many different things. He had no clu about the fact that he thought of him as a small fly either. Though he probably wouldn't mind, not today anyway.

As she easily blocked his spell his mind started to focus more on the duel, gradually zoning other things out. He knew that it wouldn't last very long, but he needed those fleeting moments of clarity into his head, those flitting moments of being able to think straight. She returned his assault and he quickly raised a shield though not a very stable one and it barely managed to propery guard him against her spell.

The effort made him relax a little however and focus a bit better. "Petrificus totalus" he chanted. The spell frizzled a bit not being as much as it should be, but it'd still be farely effective if it did hit her, just not as effective as it should had been.
