It was surprising just how much could change in a year.

Yeah, he was still on a pretty tight leash with the Ministry, but with the integration, things were looking up. There was talk that maybe he wouldn’t be on this leash for much longer, which meant that he was doing a damn good job of keeping his side hustle a secret. After the clusterfuck that had resulted in him losing his Ministry-paid housing and small salary, it would be common sense to not have that sort of stuff going on again. Nick had a lot of common sense, and a lot of street smarts for that matter. Never meant he actually put any of it to use.

His ‘office’ was more of an unused closet and he was totally fine with that. He would have preferred to just share offices with Judy but that ‘wasn’t how they worked’ and so when Finch tossed him into the old broom closet, Nick made the best of it. A few spells and charms and he was able to know when people approached the door and he was able to have enough room for his tall and lanky frame and he was able to smoke all he wanted without some alarm blaring.

Living with Judy was, in a phrase, beneficial. It was weird, having someone to rely on as much as he could her. They still had their two separate bedrooms, but that was generally for formalities anyways. Like when her family decided to randomly stop in. Nights like tonight, though, he found himself sprawled in her bed, staring up at the ceiling as she slept beside him. His issue with physical touch was getting better. With Judy, it was almost nonexistent. It was still a work in progress with just about everyone else, though. Sliding out of bed, Nick adjusted the blankets so Judy wouldn’t get cold and then headed to the dining room where his case files sat. If he was going to be awake, then he was going to at least go try and do something productive other than just stare at the blades of the fan as they went round and round and round.

The case that he was working on - or that he was supposed to be working on concerned the death of a wizard who had only recently graduated from Mahoutokoro. Normally, the UK Ministry wouldn’t have anything to do with something in Japan, but the young man had died in London and so that meant it was the UK Ministry’s problem. At first, of course, Nick had wondered if dark magic had been involved but the young man hadn’t ‘turned white’, something that the staff of Mahoutokoro was adamant that he understood. Nick had, of course, had to do some research as to what the hell that had even meant. Turned out that ‘turning white’ had to do with the robes from the school and was synonymous with practicing dark magic, but as with all of Japan in Nick’s mind, it also went one step further. Anyone who ‘turned white’ also broke the Japanese code of honor or something. Nick hadn’t actually spent a ton of time on this after being able to rule out dark magic.

Cigarette dangling from his lips, he didn’t hear the woman’s footsteps as she came down the hall. He didn’t see her until he leaned back and stretched his arms over his head. “Hey,” he said softly. “What are you doin’ up?”

A year. Judy still couldn’t believe it. Sometimes she’d look over at Nick and see the slick criminal who’d guided her, trembling and wide eyed, into a Muggle casino. Now they were living in the same apartment, most nights sharing the same bed, and he carried the title of auror. Judy hated the closet they’d put him in. She would’ve much preferred to share an office and it was a battle she was fighting with Finch daily. Luckily he seemed to finally be wearing down.

Judy awoke the moment Nick moved. She’d become so sensitive to things like that, unable to fall asleep properly anymore unless she was curled up at his side. He tucked the blanket more around her body to make sure she wouldn’t be cold and Judy listened to his footsteps, the soft click as the door closed. For a long time she lay there, wondering if she should should disturb him and tried to get back to sleep. The latter proved impossible and so she threw back the blanket, padding into the tiny dining room on bare feet.

Nick had papers spread out in front of him on the table, cigarette dangling out of his mouth. Judy watched the smoke rise to the ceiling before Nick caught her looking. “I felt you leave. I was wondering if you were alright.” She leaned over and pressed a light kiss carelessly to his neck before sitting down next to him. “What are you working on?”

Nick blew out a breath, sending a cloud of cigarette smoke into the air around him. He hadn’t remembered to charm the area to make it not so horrible to those who weren’t as apt to smoke as he was. It hadn’t even crossed his mind. He hadn’t thought Judy would have been awake as well.

Glancing up a bit, the end of the cigarette glowed red as it continued to burn, Nick made a face when she said that she’d felt him leave. “Yeah, yeah, I’m okay,” he said as she pressed her lips to his neck before settling down in the chair next to him. “You want coffee?” he asked.

Ehhhh, she asked what he was working on. “Oh, just tryin’ to figure out what was going through this guy’s head, you know?” he shook his head at the open case file in front of him. “What the hell was he doin’ when shit went wrong. I mean, the hell is a Mahoutokoro grad doin’ in London?” he mused out loud, butchering the name of the Japanese school in all his American accent glory.

Judy didn't quite believe him but didn't feel like pressing the issue. They were in a delicate place right now and she constantly feared she'd say or do something to make that string snap. Judy nodded at his mention of coffee, then laid a light hand on Nick's shoulder in a gesture not to get up. She stood and buried herself with making the coffee. It wasn't the first time a case had pulled them into the early hours of the morning and it wouldn't be the last.

Her thoughts drifted to her mother. She'd been trying to be subtle, dropping hints and questions about when Judy and Nick were going to get married. That she wanted more grandchildren before she died. Judy had swallowed the sudden lump in her throat and said that these things take time, especially with Nick. And with thier jobs, she wasn't sure if starting a family was in the cards. Even if Judy wanted to.

While she waited for the coffee machine to be done, she listened to Nick. "Did he have friends here? Family? Or do you think he got mixed up in something?" Judy gave him a pointed look over her shoulder. She'd been having her suspicions Nick was hiding something, especially when she awoke in the middle of the night to find his side of the bed empty. But she hasn't been able to figure out what it was and she loved him too much to let him go down that road again.

He’d asked if she wanted coffee and while she nodded, she also motioned for him to stay seated, disappearing into their kitchen to fix it herself. Pulling the cigarette from his lips, he tapped it against the side of the ashtray that he had nearby. “Hey, you know I wasn’t meaning for you to go do that,” he said as he leaned back to stretch. Blowing out a sigh, he just shook his head. He really hadn’t meant to wake her up, but if he told her to go back to bed now, she wouldn’t.

Judy suggested to check if the deceased had friends or family in the area before asking if he was thinking that their victim had gotten mixed up in something. She didn’t need to say anything more for him to know what sort of ‘something’ she was talking about. Nick had been ‘mixed up in something’ for the vast majority of his life. Hell, he still dabbled in it occasionally.

“Family’s saying he was doing that, what’s it called? That traveling after graduation?” America had something similar but it wasn’t exactly something he had any experience with it. Tapping his fingers against the table, he searched for the phrase he was looking for. “It’s called a gap year or something? I can’t remember.” Chewing on the end of his pen, he traded it for the cigarette as he pushed a paper aside. “He could have gotten mixed up into something while he was here, but everyone’s saying he was just vacationing.”
