***Trigger Warning for implied genocide throughout, an instance of kidnapping. I'll put a warning around/before it. ***

All the birds
Of a feather

this is some background on an unexplored part of the wizarding world. read on if you're curious!

They call her Avó, though she is no one's grandmother - she is responsible for telling the children the stories of the past. It always begins the same: "No one is quite sure how we got here. All we know is that we were here and our ancestors bore most of our struggle."

When the children would gather for Ávo's stories, Jade was one of many. She would giggle with the other children and get a slap on the wrist when she tried to wander off to climb the tree. "But we are safe here, meus netos." Their corner of Northeastern Bahia was secluded. Muggles and purebloods alike rarely wandered there; or, that was how it used to be.

They all had to follow a strict set of rules. None of the young beluxa (word for "veela" in the region; specifically, these veelas - with their simple, secluded lifestyle.) could be put in danger. On one hand, it provided a very easy childhood for Jade - on the other, it provided a very boring childhood for Jade. Her mother and father would embrace her tightly at the end of each day, and it felt like a tighter hold as each day passed - like they were worried she might slip away. But it was hard to slip away when she had little more to do then entertain herself in the children's area.

"You were blessed and cursed by our planet. Because of your alluring beauty, some will love you. And some will envy you. And some will try and steal it from you."

It was a lighter way to tell the truth of the matter. It made the way her peers were rapidly disappearing slightly less concerning. "We live in a selfish world. Beyond our beloved forest, they do not care about you," Ávo sighed, "These beasts will try and steal you - they will try to use your hair to craft their wands."

And as soon as Ávo mentioned their hair, a dark cast fell over the circle. Everyone knew what it meant now. If someone plucks a veela's hair, she dies. Ávo was tearing up, and Jade could feel her own eyes beginning to water.

That's where all her friends had gone. "Ávo, those are only the wizards. The muggles do not hurt us?"

Whenever Jade had been tempted to wander, she wanted to go to the grand cities the muggles had constructed from the ground. She wasn't as curious about Castelobruxo - in fact, blood status was not something her people kept track of at all. If you were born here, it was provided you descended from a veela - and many could also cast spells. The beluxa crafted their own wands, specific to their people, and in a manner that caused the least damage to their environment.

Ávo's mouth turned downward in disapproval. "Curse the muggles, neta. They seek to steal our trees. We are in a desert, we do not have trees to give. The First muggles are part of our fight - they are our allies. The only ones we have. But do not let yourself trust anyone too much."

Do what they
Love most of all

this is more specificially-Jade!

Sure enough, Jade was a magic beluxa. Her parents beamed at the way their six-year-old had cleaned up a spill. It was hard living in a desert - and their water supply had been tragically low. People were hurting, people were dying, or they wandered outside of their lands and never returned. Were they lost in the desert? Did they die wandering for water? Or did some wizard recognize what they were and scalp them, leaving them for dead?

Jade didn't want to think about it. But she had saved the water: and this accidental incident meant that she needed a wand. In the beluxa culture, wand picks the wizard is less important than tree picks the wizard. The Carribean trumpet tree is essential to the beluxa and therefore, they do not arbitrarily cut them down and carve wands hoping one will work.

So in the same day, when the power of a Carribean trumpet tree was reduced as a branch fell to the ground, Ávo brought a grinning Jade by the hand - and handed the wood over to their master carver. Additionally, the beluxa do not use wand cores that were obtained by harming any creature. "Neta, the Iara that in habits our lands donated these to us. Your hair can be a donation - but use it wisely."

Why the scales? Well, the wandmaker had set a slew of potential core-materials in front of Jade and let her pick. The scales reacted to her magic, and it all made sense since her first instance involved water.

Her excited parents had no intention of ever sending their baby out to Castelobruxo. Wizards could be cruel, and Jade was a rare specimen. In fact, she was increasingly rare.

The day the girl wandered out of their protected area nearly gave them a heart attack. More importantly, that day almost left Jade with a heart attack. She had decided to follow one of the creeks that sustained their region - and she followed it too far. Looking up, not much of her surroundings had changed. She was eight with her first interaction - much too young for a muggle to be wandering alone, nevermind someone considered so at-risk - with an outsider.

She'd caught someone's eye, as the beluxa so commonly did. Jade didn't notice she was being watched or followed until it was too late - as she tried to run, a spell struck her still. She doesn't remember whose face she saw, but she remembers how it felt to have someone roughly grab her by the hairs on her head, and crying out from the sensation.

Just as a pair of shears neared her curls, the familiar screech of another beluxa sounded. Beautiful as they were, these were not creatures to be dismissed. The hand holding her released and Jade fell to the ground, and she heard a scream. But it wasn't the beluxa screaming.

Jade was returned to her parents' arms and they embraced her warmly. She was given a smack on the rear for wandering like she did, but her parents hugged her anyway. Ávo stopped by with a word of advice - "Don't trust anyone. Do not wander far, they will try to steal you."

Show us the best
You can do

As the years went on, the beluxa's numbers continued to dwindle. Jade lived to see Ávo pass, though it was a natural death, something most beluxa longed to see. She had neared her full century and a half, and so her funeral was a celebration - not a mourning session.

Eventually, Jade lived to be the last young beluxa. The others were not young enough to bear children, and there were not enough pairs left to have more if they wanted to. It was starting to look bleak for their people, because the low numbers made their way of life more complicated. Jade used her magic to help as best as she could, although her abilities were far from polished - the wandmaker was her teacher, but he could only teach what the other beluxa before her had known.

At twelve she had to wander outside of their protected land. It wasn't because she wanted to. Her mother had become sick, and they couldn't risk another death, another hit to their people. So, Jade was asked to travel to find a witch to bring back and brew a cure. Nothing the wandmaker had tried worked. They needed outside help, which went to say just how dire their situation was.

Jade walked with a white-knuckled grip on her wand. She didn't relax when she finally made it to a muggle town. She didn't look down shyly to duck away from all of the eyes that were drawn to her, whether they wanted to be or not. She had to be on-guard. She had to save her mother. She went to the home she was instructed to go to - and when her rap on the door was answered, Jade could tell the woman knew.

Maybe she misread the gleam in the woman's eye. Maybe she misinterpreted the welcoming hug, the kiss, something that felt almost like a mother's touch. She hesitated as she was welcomed inside, but her stomach grumbled and something smelled good. Someone had given her this address, had trusted her to leave for this home, so surely no harm would come from going inside.
tw for kidnapping.

Time seemed to meld together in the time that she ate and the time that she lost consciousness. When Jade regained sight of where she was, she realized she wasn't in the kitchen she remembered. Her wand was still safely in her hand - its rugged structure probably was mistaken for just a piece of wood by other wizards - and she heard people talking. And they were talking about her, she realized.

"Do you realize what this is?" 'What'. They had called her a 'what', and not a 'who'. A second voice replied, "It's our ticket out of here. We take our fortune and we leave. We can make a better life." There was a thud as the first speaker hit the second, "No, you idiot - this one's too young. I thought there weren't any left. We found the last one. We can set a trade deal. Someone will find good use."

There was a flick of a wand in her direction, and everything went black again. end tw.

The next time Jade awoke, she was surprised to feel herself tucked into a bed. There was someone leaning over her, and she jumped awake. The man in the glasses tried to soothe her, "No need to startle, miss. No one is going to harm you."

Jade raised a suspicious brow at her captor, who raised his hands in surrender. She drew her wand nonetheless, surprised to see it still hadn't been confiscated.

"I am simply a professor here at Castelobruxo. I know this might all seem strange to you, but we are so excited to have you here with us."

Jade cast a stinging hex at the innocuous man anyway. Her eyes narrowed at him, "My mother. I need to return to my mother. She is ill and I am supposed to cure her. That is, if she is still alive and my absence has not stressed her to death."

"A feisty one, I see. That was a very well placed spell - especially for one of... your kind." there was something about his tone that she did not like. "I have spent a lot of time with your sort, and I am so sad to see that you are all that's left." He disarmed her before she could cast another spell, and Jade found herself scrambling for her wand. The man reached to pat her arm, "No, no, you need to stay here. We will move you in with the other students as soon as we can."

Students. Some wizards had come and stolen this land from the first muggles who inhabited it, and turned their home into a school. It was disgusting. This is what Ávo had been telling her about. Jade felt ill herself. She was effectively trapped - by someone who thought he was helping her.

Everyone here
Is on fire

Some would argue that Jade was given special treatment while she was at Castelobruxo.

Jade would counter that she was given special treatment for a prisoner as she was kept here, where she did not want to stay. She learned her lessons, she took every opportunity she had to accidentally scuff up one of her captors (because obviously, her species somehow made her less capable and so her spells were poorly aimed) - or "professors" as they liked to call themselves. Whatever made them sleep at night. And no matter what she did, she was always met with a soft tone: "You're only here so we can keep you safe. You are such an amazing creature, and the last of your kind." The word "last" haunted her. What did they mean? What had happened to her family? Did they go into hiding?

The beluxa didn't have a form of communication with the outside world, so Jade had no way to contact them. She would never know what happened to her sick mother, or the rest of the beluxa.

It turned out, while Jade was the last beluxa, she wasn't the last of those like her. The professor with the glasses had repeatedly placed her in the company of what they called veelas - like her, he said. They are the same.

Except they weren't. These people had grown up detached from their world. They trusted these people that hunted them. Jade didn't trust them as a result, and most of these attempts would leave the other person retreating with their tail between their legs.

She was under the staff's scrutiny every moment of her time at Castelobruxo. Good for a veela, people would comment, on her paperwork, or on her spellwork. She knew what Ávo meant now: she wanted to curse all of them. Jade found that because of the implications associated with beings like her, she had to work twice as hard to get half the credit. One time, a professor offered her extra credit if she would donate a lock of hair towards his wandwork. Jade did not get away with her response and received a week's worth of detentions.

Jade wasn't particularly mean to other students unless they were mean to her. She has strong responses to people who even reach towards her hair, or decide to comment on it. It has a lot to do with her experience in the past (see: dementor memory), and the lessons she was taught growing up. She's still empathetic and will take care of people around her, to an extent, but she takes a long time to open up. And she was much too distant in Castelobruxo because of how she got there to form any strong friendships.

It wasn't until Jade met a European exchange student herself that she knew there were any schools outside of the one she was trapped in. It seemed like the perfect opportunity - as much as Jade loved Brazil, Castelobruxo wasn't her Brazil.

Someone called her a silly little veela when she asked about the other schools. Apparently there were schools all over the world. And Jade wanted to be in a place as different from where she was as possible - and the direct contrast to lush, sunny Brazil, was the dark, icy landscape of Durmstrang. All it took was paperwork, some arguing from the man in the glasses on how she had to stay here for research purposes, she was the last research opportunity they had for her kind, which only solidified Jade's eagerness to leave.

She was welcomed by the bitter cold - that she was also unprepared for, because she didn't realize just how cold a country could get. And Jade was whisked off to take her tests, and placed in Set 2. It wasn't Set 3, and considering how her magical training differed from wizards of a similar age, Jade was still excited to start her fourth year at Durmstrang.
"Good for a veela," the test proctor commented.

You can't find it
Anywhere else.

Jade is still in the process of adjusting to the new school - timezones, the lighting or lack thereof, the students - but she's happy to have made it out of Castelobruxo. At best, people seem confused by her stories of her life before Durmstrang, and at worst, they become defensive of wizarding wand customs.

She's still happy to tell her stories, though; and the other schools provide the opportunity to explore a little more of the world. And it allows her to take a much-needed break from Durmstrang. Jade's also happy to find she's not the only outsider between all three schools, and some of her peers grew up in different environments, as well. She likes to think this makes the professors more understanding, too. And between all three schools, enough people have taught her to stop asking if they were given permission from their dragon or their phoenix.

She's found herself settled comfortably into herbology and care of magical creatures at Hogwarts, as both were heavily a part of Castelobruxo's curriculum. Her hands-on experience has helped a bit as well, even if the school deals with a different sort of flora and fauna than what she's used to.

No matter how much time she spends at the schools, though, Jade can't help to notice that none of them really feel like home.

CONNECTIONS

Name - "Jewel" is a general term for a precious stone and "Jade" is a similar-sounding stone known for its bluish-green color. Spix is for the Spix Macaw, the species of macaw featured in the movie Rio.

Veela - The first line of Jewel's bio on the Rio Wiki states, "...it is believed that Jewel is the last female of her kind...". As such it's fitting that Jade is a (relatively) rare combination herself; and while part-veelas are discriminated against in parts of the wizarding world, it's not necessarily a bad combination, and something that could be desirable (as opposed to vampires, etc). Blu also doesn't shut up about Jewel's beauty. Also, Bulgaria is listed as the native terrain for Veelas on the Harry Potter wiki (likely because they derive from the vila found in slavic mythology), so I decided to make veelas and their descendants a very rare sort in Jade's native Brazil.

Beluxa - This is a more specific nod to the Spix Macaw. While many species of bird in South America face endangerment, the Spix Macaw specifically has none left in the wild, and only 100 in captivity. Rio focuses heavily on this aspect, as well as the troubles of poaching and the ethical questions surrounding it (hence the instances of disappearing veela in Bahia). "Beluxa" is a combination of the Portuguese words for "witch" and "beauty".

Carribean Trumpet Tree - I'll mention this again later, but the Carribean Trumpet Tree is an essential part of the life of the Spix macaw. This is their nesting tree, and recently the nesting tree has dwindled as the spix macaw's population has.

School & Set - Rio explores Jewel escaping captivity and having some freedom, for better or for worse. Once she's out, she's just an average macaw. As such, Jade is at Durmstrang - an odd school, for better or for worse, free from her captors for the time being - and in Set 2, because she's just like the average student. Despite having been treated like a rarity where she was before. She's a bit lost in the new school, like Jewel is lost in the city-part of Rio de Janeiro. But it doesn't matter, because she's finally free to spread her wings.

Views on Wizards - Jade is very distrusting of wizards, mostly because she's seen how they've treated her people in the past. This mirrors Jewel's distrust of humans.

Pretty Bird - I already mentioned a lot of this in the veela section, but a lot of times Jewel's reduced to being beautiful, instead of being recognized for her brains and ability. Jade's often reduced to just a veela.

Dementor memory - In the movies Jewel is pursued by Nigel, who threatens to make her "ugly".

Castelobruxo - Jewel is taken from her home and kept ""for her safety"" in captivity. Jade is taken from her home (sort of) and kept at Castelobruxo for her safety. Similarly, Jewel is noted as needing her own space and being rather spirited. The camera pans to an injured birdkeeper, and this is a nod to how Jade has been towards her captors. She is not mistreated where she is kept, though the manner in which she got there is questionable, and Jewel feels patronized by her captors. She insists that she's "not some pet". The attempts to make her befriend other veela, despite their vast differences, is similar to the attempt at a forced arrangement between Blu and Jewel in the movie. Sometimes Jewel uses this to her advantage to distract people and get away with questionable behavior (e.g. trying to escape).

Man in the Glasses - In the movies, Dr. Tulio Monteiro is an ornithologist with a deep love for birds. He has good intentions but Jewel is still not fond of him, particularly because she's being kept in captivity. He tries to help Blu court Jewel, like the man in the glasses tries to help Jade befriend other veela.

Patronus - The Brazilian porcupine is a shy, nocturnal creature that lives in trees. They're consistently solitary or live in pairs; this relates to Jewel's independent streak, but also works as a nod to her soft side. Rio focuses on a pair of Spix Macaws. And obviously, if you rub her the wrong way Jade/Jewel can be a little prickly.

Wand - The Carribean Trumpet Tree is the tree that Spix Macaws are heavily reliant on. Originally, I took a wand quiz and Jade's answers spat out a fitting one - but then I realized the tree does not exist in Brazil at all, so it doesn't make sense. The wand's core is from the scales of a Iara,
also called Yara, a mythological water nymph/siren that is said to inhabit Brazil. Water nymph ties into the word "Rio" pretty well.

Face Claim - Amandla Stenberg is actually the voice actress for one of Blu and Jewel's children in the sequel and so she seemed fitting for a younger version of the character.

Jade's a part-veela exchange student from Castelobruxo. She doesn't really like talking about her experience at that school and she's more than happy to have a fresh start at Durmstrang.

FRIENDS

Jade likes to keep her distance from others, but she's also accustomed to being around people. Growing up, very little of her time was spent alone, even at times when she was one of the only children around. So, whle she has trouble approaching people first, and can come off as a bit stuck-up, she's honestly just shy. It'll take her a while to really open up but she's definitely eager to have new friends and meet students and profs alike.

LOVERS

It seemed like people were trying to set her up with other veela when she was back at Castelobruxo, and as a result Jade tries to avoid them. She would much rather explore love on her own than by some mandate for research and preservation. She's not exactly a romantic right now and it certainly was never her priority, but feel free to throw ideas this way!

ENEMIES

Jade's crazy curious about everything around her and she can come off a little brusque when she's asking questions. Really though, she spent most of her life pretty isolated from the outside world so this is all new to her. She has a habit of also overreacting to a few things - people reaching for her, hair questions, Castelobruxo questions - in fact, her responses to Castelobruxo questions might seem a bit outlandish. This could definitely be off-putting for people. She can also come off as a bit of a hoarder because she's so used to not having enough, that throwing things away can be very difficult. Maybe some roommates have trouble with her trash pile, idk.

CONNECTIONS

Name - "Jewel" is a general term for a precious stone and "Jade" is a similar-sounding stone known for its bluish-green color. Spix is for the Spix Macaw, the species of macaw featured in the movie Rio.

Half-Veela - The first line of Jewel's bio on the Rio Wiki states, "...it is believed that Jewel is the last female of her kind...".

School & Set - Rio explores Jewel escaping captivity and having some freedom, for better or for worse. Once she's out, she's just an average macaw. As such, Jade is at Durmstrang - an odd school, for better or for worse, free from her parents for the time being - and in Set 2, because she's justu like the average student. Despite having been treated like a rarity where she was before.

Views on Wizards - Jade is very distrusting of pureblood wizards, mostly because she's seen how they've treated her people in the past. This mirrors Jewel's distrust of humans.

Castelbruxo - The transfer between schools seemed obvious to me: it's taking Jade away from her native land and giving her some freedom. Though for site/plot purposes I put her in an unfamiliar setting. And I chose Castelbruxo because they allow exchanges for their students, their strong ties to herbology/magical creatures and its location in Brazil.

The wand's core is a Phoenix Feather mostly bc of its rarity and the fact that it's, well, a feather.
