Word was that there was another American somewhere in the Ministry. Nick was intrigued because it wasn’t too often that there were Americans in the Ministry. And not just visiting Americans, either. He could count on one hand how many Americans there were now, including him. And he didn’t even have to use two of his fingers - wait, no. One didn’t work in the Ministry anymore. So he didn’t have to use three of his fingers to count.
And besides, he’d hit a wall on the stupid case he was working on, so he wanted to get out and walk around for a bit. Judy was busy, something about her family that Nick really didn’t want to get involved with, so he left her alone and went out in search of this other American.
Judy’s mother was already making eyes at the two of them, and he wasn’t quite sure what to think of it. He was aware that her parents were getting on up there in terms of age but if they were looking for littles of any kind, then they needed to shift their focus to one of Judy’s many other siblings because he was not going down that path any time soon. Not to mention that they weren’t even officially anything. They were partners in the work sense, but… Damn, it was more complicated than things Nick preferred to be a part of.
Asking around, he was pointed in the right direction and ended up in the Department for Magical Accidents and Catastrophes, and Nick couldn’t help but laugh at that department name. It sounded a hell of a lot cooler than Magical Law Enforcement.
Walking into the department, he bumped into another worker, easily swiping a smooth round device from the pocket of her work robes and muttering a quick apology. Just another reason why wearing robes was impractical and why Nick wore jeans and a long-sleeved t-shirt instead. Sure he had a set of work robes in his broom closet of an office but that didn’t mean he actively wore them. They were hot and didn’t breathe well. He didn’t like them, so he didn’t wear them.
A Remembrall. How quaint. “Oh, hey, I think you dropped this,” he said, after a moment had passed, in a louder-than-probably-necessary voice to get the lady’s attention. She was short, had glasses, and her blonde hair was tied up into a tight bun that actually looked kinda painful. Yikes. She turned and saw that Nick was holding out her Remembrall and gave a squeak.
Like, an actual squeak, it was weird.
The lady was quick to reclaim her trinket and thank him for grabbing it for her, claiming that she wouldn’t be able to get anything done without it. As she spoke, it filled with a red smoke and Nick just rose an eyebrow and handed it back to her. She was forgetting something and the chances of her remembering, he figured, were probably slim to none.
Stopping at one of the other desks to ask for directions, and successfully swiping the worker’s name plate, he was pointed towards an office where the door was standing open, boxes visible from where he currently stood. “Hey thanks,” he said, handing the worker back his name plate before making his way over to the office in question.
“Huh, not exactly what I pictured, but I guess it works,” he said as he leaned against the doorway. “Word is that you’re American.”

Who the fuck thought it’d be a good idea to put him on babysitting duty?
Nick just stared at the kid that sat in the chair opposite his own, very glad for the desk’s barrier between the two of them. He was super young, the hell was he doing here? And it wasn’t like his office was very spacious to begin with. Add in another person and BAM instant tight space.
“So…” Nick blew out a sigh, not really sure what he was supposed to be doing here. “I didn’t catch yer name when they told it to me. Kinda was tryin’ to get over the fact they stuck a kid in here with me.” Honesty was the best policy, right?

It was surprising just how much could change in a year.
Yeah, he was still on a pretty tight leash with the Ministry, but with the integration, things were looking up. There was talk that maybe he wouldn’t be on this leash for much longer, which meant that he was doing a damn good job of keeping his side hustle a secret. After the clusterfuck that had resulted in him losing his Ministry-paid housing and small salary, it would be common sense to not have that sort of stuff going on again. Nick had a lot of common sense, and a lot of street smarts for that matter. Never meant he actually put any of it to use.
His ‘office’ was more of an unused closet and he was totally fine with that. He would have preferred to just share offices with Judy but that ‘wasn’t how they worked’ and so when Finch tossed him into the old broom closet, Nick made the best of it. A few spells and charms and he was able to know when people approached the door and he was able to have enough room for his tall and lanky frame and he was able to smoke all he wanted without some alarm blaring.
Living with Judy was, in a phrase, beneficial. It was weird, having someone to rely on as much as he could her. They still had their two separate bedrooms, but that was generally for formalities anyways. Like when her family decided to randomly stop in. Nights like tonight, though, he found himself sprawled in her bed, staring up at the ceiling as she slept beside him. His issue with physical touch was getting better. With Judy, it was almost nonexistent. It was still a work in progress with just about everyone else, though. Sliding out of bed, Nick adjusted the blankets so Judy wouldn’t get cold and then headed to the dining room where his case files sat. If he was going to be awake, then he was going to at least go try and do something productive other than just stare at the blades of the fan as they went round and round and round.
The case that he was working on - or that he was supposed to be working on concerned the death of a wizard who had only recently graduated from Mahoutokoro. Normally, the UK Ministry wouldn’t have anything to do with something in Japan, but the young man had died in London and so that meant it was the UK Ministry’s problem. At first, of course, Nick had wondered if dark magic had been involved but the young man hadn’t ‘turned white’, something that the staff of Mahoutokoro was adamant that he understood. Nick had, of course, had to do some research as to what the hell that had even meant. Turned out that ‘turning white’ had to do with the robes from the school and was synonymous with practicing dark magic, but as with all of Japan in Nick’s mind, it also went one step further. Anyone who ‘turned white’ also broke the Japanese code of honor or something. Nick hadn’t actually spent a ton of time on this after being able to rule out dark magic.
Cigarette dangling from his lips, he didn’t hear the woman’s footsteps as she came down the hall. He didn’t see her until he leaned back and stretched his arms over his head. “Hey,” he said softly. “What are you doin’ up?”

To put it bluntly, Nick was shaken.
He told nobody about the attack, and he wasn’t really sure who he would tell anyways. He’d only known the woman that was currently shackled to him for a little over two months and while he was definitely getting along more with this one than the previous ‘handlers’, he still wasn’t sure where he stood with her. He definitely wasn’t about to announce that he wasn’t sure if the injury on his shoulder and arm were actual bites, just scratches/gashes, or something else.
Nick paced outside of St. Mungo’s, not even sure if he wanted to know himself. Sucking in a breath, the criminal pushed open the door and walked up to the desk, probably looking rather out of place and in need of a legitimate wash.
brayden maddox | OOC: This thread takes place in late November 2016.
